What Should Dealers Stock for the Chess Season?

LinkedIn Post — 2026-10-19 (topic: stocking advice for distributors/dealers)

Dealers ask me every autumn: what should I stock for the chess season? My answer is always the same — 70% workhorses, 30% special pieces.

The workhorses are club sets: plastic Staunton, 95mm king, weighted and felted, a vinyl board, a bag that survives the trunk of a car. These are what schools, clubs and tournament shops reorder year after year, and they are where your margin is most predictable.

The 30% is where you differentiate: one wooden set with character, one large display board, one premium clock. One good story per shelf beats ten look-alike boxes.

And the rule that never changes: order early. A 1,000-set run takes roughly a month from mould to container. Order when you see the calendar, not when the shelf is empty.
